VA Houston ER Expansion

The Houston VA Medical Center has the busiest emergency department in the VA system but space currently does not properly support growing patient volume. As a result, the VA is seeking a significant expansion of the department with a long-range plan for growth.

In preparation for future phasing, the Apogee team master planned 25,000 SF of space within the hospital. The team began with an on-site charette process to develop scenarios that respond to the project goals and operational needs, engaging key stakeholders at the Houston VA Medical Center in discussion about the challenges and opportunities presented by the project.

Many VA staff members were engaged in the process, including members from supporting departments, such as pharmacy and radiology. Throughout the process, the team explored multiple options for expanding the emergency department space.

The study resulted in a clear direction for the department. All new spaces are private rooms, moving towards the most appropriate care spaces with existing treatment bays remaining open with cubicle curtains to maintain flexibility for overflow patients and keeping the project within budget.
